Membership of the Association (general referred to as "SOSA") is open to all former pupils of Sidcot School and all current and former members of the School Staff and Governing Board as of right (Ordinary members) and to any others with an interest in SOSA and the School, with the approval of the SOSA General Committee (Associate members).
Aims
The aims of the Sidcot Old Scholars' Association are as follows:
- to maintain an interest in and give support to the School; and
- to keep up a friendly relationship between those who have been at the School.
Aim (1) is promoted and achieved by:
Raising money (a) for new buildings at the School through the Sidcot Building Trust Fund (SBTF*), (b) to help needy pupils to remain at the School through the Sidcot Bursary Trust (SBT*), (c) to provide an SOSA Bursary at the School, several annual Travel Scholarships for School leavers and other ad hoc donations to the School through the SOSA Education Trust (SET*);
Maintaining contact with the School in many ways, including (a) nominating an appropriately experienced SOSA member to become a School Governor and (b) appointing members of the School staff to represent the School on the SOSA General Committee; and Publishing books about the School and SOSA, jointly with the School and otherwise.
Aim (2) is promoted and achieved by:
Organising a residential Reunion at the School each Easter with a full programme of social, musical and dramatic activities;
Sending and receiving greetings at the Easter Reunion to and from members throughout the world;
Holding an Annual Meeting during the Easter Reunion to report on activities over the previous year, to elect SOSA's Officers and General Committee and to consider and decide upon any other relevant business;
Publishing an Annual Report of SOSA's activities with news of members throughout the world;
Promoting and supporting reunions of members and other former pupils at the School based upon year groups or regional locations;
Maintaining a database of members and records of the births, marriages, significant anniversaries and deaths of members and their families and a register of all members since the School was constituted in 1808;
Maintaining contact with members worldwide through Local Secretaries, Overseas Correspondents and the Editor of "Sidcot in All the World"; and
Providing and selling SOSA merchandise, such as ties, brooches and clothing carrying SOSA's emblems and the aforementioned books and register;
* SBTF, SBT and SET are registered charities set up by SOSA, whose Trustees and managing committees are made up by SOSA members.
The SOSA's affairs and activities are organised by the General Committee made up of the officers and several ordinary committee members appointed or reappointed at the Annual Meeting and overseen by the President and Vice-President who are appointed at each Annual Meeting and serve for 2 years (the first as Vice-President and the second as President).
